Health
Safety Consultants – A Summary of the Requirements
and our Health and Safety Consultancy Services
|
General
Health and Safety
Directors and those responsible for health
and safety in the workplace should realise that they
are legally responsible under the health & safety
at work act and could be personally fined or go to
jail if there is a serious accident.
Put
simply, employers have a duty to take care of the people who
may be affected by what they do, likewise employees have a
duty to care for themselves and their colleagues and others
in their workplace.
But,
with the growth of health and safety at work legislation and
the changing health & safety requirements, it is increasingly
difficult for organisations to know what has an impact on
their business. For example, there are in excess of 300 headings
under which health and safety issues are considered.

A
summary of the health and safety services that we
provide is given below and more information on each
safety matter can be found on the appropriate page

What
is needed to improve your health & safety in the
workplace?
So where do you start - overall health and safety in the workplace is governed by the Health and Safety at Work Act, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations and other more detailed regulations – and Sheenglen Health and Safety Consultants suggest that the first step is to carry out an initial risk assessment / initial health and safety audit of the existing controls and then, when needed, to further carry out the various types of risk assessments that are required by law.
Risk
Assessments
As a minimum the following type of assessments are
required:
In
addition, as mentioned above, an initial risk assessment
/ health and safety audit should be carried out. This
is in order to determine what health and safety requirements
are already in place, and to decide what more is required.
|
| It
includes: |
|
-
an
examination of existing health and safety documents
- typically health and safety manuals, training
records, testing records
-
checking
existing controls and requirements during a tour
of the premises, such as occupational health hazards,
safety signs, fire extinguishers etc.
-
reviewing
any specific assessments (see below)
|
| |
|
Health
and Safety Policy or Health and Safety Manual
A health and safety policy is required by law for
all organisations employing 5 or more people. |
| |
|
Generally,
the health & safety policy is contained within
a Health and Safety Manual, which addresses general
health and safety issues, which include:
- first
aid
- health
and safety training
-
accident
reporting and RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases
and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations)
-
general
fire safety
-
personal
protective equipment (PPE)
-
safe
working practices
-
display
screen equipment/VDU
-
general
COSHH requirements
-
manual
handling
- electrical
safety at work
|
The
above are just general headings, but there are other specific
requirements (where applicable) for health and safety, for
example: working at height, asbestos, noise and vibration,
plant and equipment, vehicles etc. |

BS OHSAS
18001
Whereas a Health & Safety Policy is required by law, an increasing number of companies are choosing to introduce a health and safety system that satisfies the requirements of BS OHSAS 18001, “Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems - Requirements”. Further information about this and how we can assist is shown in our Health
and Safety Consultant - Support Services.
